Over the last few weeks, I've made the rounds — or should I say "roundabouts" — on Kentucky road projects in the tri-state area. I've managed to navigate several of those new-to-relatively-new Henderson roundabouts.

And my daily life will often take me through the new one at the Old Hartford Road/Foors Lane/Fairview Drive intersection in Owensboro.

Now, let's add to this equation the fact that I also drove across the twin bridges between Henderson and Evansville this weekend. As you may know, the twins' southbound lane has needed and been receiving structural love over the last week or so. (I also got stuck in that Indiana State Route 66 detour mess this weekend, too, but it already has its own story.)

Kentucky's Summer Road Projects Are Way Down in 2026

My point is, when we're constantly dealing with detours and road work where we live, and in multiple locations, it could come as a surprise to learn that, overall, Kentucky's summer road projects are down for 2026. And considerably so, I might add. Take a look at this graph I created using Kentucky Transportation Cabinet data shared by Kentucky Lantern.

Welcome to Kentucky's Orange-Cone Season

Maybe it's that August surge that's made it seem like road work has been everywhere all summer. You know, it was quiet in June and July and then, BOOM, 47 projects this month alone. And that's still far below every month surveyed over the last three summers, save one.

So, if it feels like road construction is suddenly everywhere, you're not imagining things. August has been much busier. But zoom out to the entire summer, and Kentucky's orange-cone season has actually been remarkably quiet by comparison.
