When you’re climbing the ladder toward the big leagues, making a good first impression is pretty important. Evansville’s Matthew Fisher has done exactly that!

Matthew Fisher Dominated in Rookie Ball

The Memorial High School graduate is already moving up in the Philadelphia Phillies organization after spending just six games with the rookie-level Florida Complex League Phillies. The pitcher was dominant in his brief stay, striking out 22 batters in just over 16 innings of work and showing enough promise to earn a promotion to the Single-A Clearwater Threshers.

Not bad for a guy who was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 MLB Draft.

The Journey to Philadelphia Continues

The move is another exciting step in Fisher’s journey toward his ultimate goal of pitching in the major leagues. While there’s still plenty of baseball ahead, every promotion means he’s getting one step closer to wearing a Phillies uniform under the bright lights in the City of Brotherly Love.

A Proud Dad Story Worth Sharing

If you’ll allow me to be a proud dad for just a minute – I have to share my one and only Matthew Fisher story. My son Oliver is the same age as Matthew and faced him a few times while playing for Reitz High School. In a game during their senior season – when the stands were full of MLB scouts, and Matthew was dealing on everybody – my boy managed to get a base hit off of him. We like to joke that years from now, when Fisher is in the big leagues, you can always tell people that you got a hit against him.

Southern Indiana Talent is Everywhere

Here are some other Southern Indiana players currently chasing the dream of reaching the majors:

  • Cam Tilly (Castle HS) is in the New York Mets organization.
  • Cameron Decker (Evansville North HS) is in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.
  • Connor Foley (Jasper HS) is in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.
  • Elijah Dunham (Reitz HS) is in the New York Yankees organization.

And I would be remiss not to mention Colson Montgomery (Southridge HS in Huntingburg, IN), who is having a great season as the everyday shortstop for the Chicago White Sox

It’s also worth mentioning that two Evansville natives have prominent roles with the Philadelphia Phillies. Yankees legend and Hall of Fame candidate Don Mattingly (who also went to Memorial HS) is the current Phillies manager. The Phillies general manager just so happens to be Don’s son, Preston Mattingly. How cool would it be for Matthew to get “the call” from a Mattingly?

So congratulations to Matthew on the promotion, and here’s hoping he keeps doing what he’s been doing all along — striking people out and keepin’ on movin’ on up.
