In the state of Indiana, the Eastern Box Turtles are a protected species and removing them from the wild is actually illegal. But what do you do if you encounter one making an ever so slow trek across a busy road? According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, if you encounter a turtle crossing the road, you should move it to the side of the road, maintaining the turtle's direction of travel. Turtle cannot and should not be taken home or moved to another location according to Indiana DNR. It is illegal to collect Eastern Box Turtles from the wild in Indiana. So... the next time you spot a turtle crossing the road, just help it cross the road. Don't take it home with you.
