Here’s Why You’re Seeing Pinwheels Along Owensboro, KY’s Busiest Street
The annual Stand Against Child Abuse is coming up Friday, April 14th on the front lawn of Kentucky Wesleyan College in the heart of Owensboro. Tuesday morning, about 100 8th graders from Owensboro Innovation Middle School helped get ready for it. They lined the campus' front sidewalk with pinwheels. Hundreds of them.
Pinwheels are a long-standing way to bring awareness to instances of child abuse in our communities and are a symbol of this annual event, which is co-presented by GRADD's Community Coalition for Children and the Department of Community Based Services.
Today, students from Owensboro iMiddle joined forces with those agencies to prepare the front lawn for Friday's event.
And the pinwheels made their way across Frederica Street as well. Here at the Townsquare Media-Owensboro office, we're proudly exhibiting the pinwheels too.

The annual Stand Against Child Abuse gets underway at 4:30pm CST on Friday, April 14th. This year's event, which is FREE to the public, will feature a tree planting ceremony. A weeping willow will be planted on the front lawn of the KWC campus to commemorate the nearly 200 children in Kentucky who lost their lives or nearly lost their lives due to instances of child abuse in 2022. Those numbers are staggering, which is why awareness events like this are so important to the community and Commonwealth.
In addition to helping raise awareness about the seriousness and prevalence of child abuse in the GRADD region and statewide, there will be a variety of service agencies on hand providing access to resources and education.
Also, this year’s event will also feature activities such as inflatables and a petting zoo, free hot dogs and more.
