I Turned My Favorite Pixar Movie Into My Mom’s Birthday Gift
I Made My Mom’s Birthday Gift Based on My Favorite Pixar Movie… and It Was Edible!
When it came time to figure out what to get my mom for her birthday this year, I ran into a problem. Money isn't exactly flowing like a Disney fountain these days, and my parents are the kind of people who, if they want something, they just go buy it themselves.
So instead of shopping for a gift, I decided to make one.
Any guesses what it was? I based my inspiration off my favorite Pixar movie that still brings out my inner 'kid' today.
If you said Ratatouille, you're absolutely right.

A Birthday Gift Inspired by Pixar
I've always loved Ratatouille. It's been my favorite Pixar movie ever since my mom took me to see it when it came out back in 2007. I even had a Remy-themed Pez dispenser growing up, so it's safe to say I've been a fan for a while.
Over the years, I've watched countless Disney dinner date videos online where people create meals inspired by their favorite movies. This year, I figured it was finally time to try one myself.
This honestly turned out to be one of the most thoughtful gifts I've ever given and a fun project at the same time. Now, I am wondering what other Disney movies I could make meals for dinner. It gives me an excuse to get creative in the kitchen while watching my favorite films that give me nostalgia.
Making the Sauce
Sure, you could buy sauce from the store.
But would Remy buy sauce from a jar?
Of course not. They wouldn't let him into a store!
To make the homemade sauce, I used:
- 2 red bell peppers
- 3 heirloom tomatoes
- Several cloves of garlic
- A couple of shallots
- 1 jalapeño
- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper
I chopped everything up, tossed it in the oven at 425 degrees for about 45 minutes, then blended it until smooth.
Once the sauce was ready, I poured it into the bottom of an oven-safe round baking dish. And yes, all of it goes in the pan. No saving some for later.
Trust the process.

The Ratatouille Layer
Now comes the part that takes a little patience.
For the vegetable layer, you'll need:
- 3 zucchini
- 3 yellow squash
- 1 eggplant
- 4 Roma tomatoes
- Fresh parsley
I sliced everything very thin and arranged the vegetables in a circular pattern over the sauce.
Was it time-consuming?
Yes.
Was it worth it?
Also yes.
There was something surprisingly relaxing about standing in the kitchen slicing vegetables and carefully arranging them. Maybe it was knowing I was making something special for my mom, or maybe it was just satisfying seeing all those colorful veggies come together.
Once everything was arranged, I baked it at 425 degrees for another 45 minutes.

The Verdict
The final result looked straight out of the movie.
More importantly, my mom loved it.
What started as a way to save money ended up becoming a gift that felt much more personal than anything I could have bought at a store. It also gave me an excuse to revisit one of my favorite childhood movies and spend a few hours pretending I was cooking alongside Remy.
I'd call that a win.
Thanks for the inspiration, Remy.
Now I'm curious: What's another Disney or Pixar movie that could inspire a great meal? Let me know your ideas because I might just have to try another movie-inspired dinner night soon. 🍽️🐭🎬
