Soaking Up the Holidays in my New Hometown

Spending the holidays in my new hometown has been such a treat, especially getting to witness some of the iconic community traditions people here look forward to all year. One of the first events I had circled on my calendar was the Evansville Philharmonic’s Peppermint Pops—and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

Walking into the Victory Theatre felt like stepping straight into a Christmas card. Over 200 performers filled the stage with classic holiday songs, smiles, and energy that just wrapped you up in the spirit of the season. And the lineup? Absolutely stacked. A special guest singer from New York, the North High School Huskettes Dance Team, the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus, and the Evansville Children’s Choir… it was a full-on festive takeover.

And of course, the man behind all that magic: Roger Kalia.

The first time I met Roger at the station, I remember turning to Bobby and saying, “He has such a positive, happy spirit.” Roger is one of those people who radiates kindness and passion. You can tell he genuinely loves what he does—and that passion shows in every single performance he conducts. The Peppermint Pops felt like a reflection of that energy. Elegant, warm, joyful, and totally unforgettable.

An Atmosphere Full of Elegance and Excitement

The crowd was fully locked in the entire night. People cheered for the musicians, the chorus, the dancers—even for the little girl, maybe six years old, who got the honor of being a student conductor. The audience absolutely lost it for her. The whole room just felt connected in this shared, happy, holiday moment.

I brought my mom with me, and she loved the show just as much as I did. It’s one thing to enjoy a performance yourself, but seeing someone you care about completely light up too? That hits different.

A Night to Remember and Do Again

This night reminded me why local holiday traditions matter so much. They bring people together, lift spirits, and make a city feel like home. I can’t wait to soak up even more Christmas staples around the community—and I already know I’ll be back at the Victory Theatre again and again for more performances conducted by Roger Kalia.

Because if Peppermint Pops is any indication… this city really knows how to do the holidays right. 🎄✨

Front Row View of Blues Traveler in Concert at The Victory Theatre

On September 21, 2021, Blues Traveler came to the Victory Theatre in Evansville while on tour promoting their new album Traveler's Blues. The remainder of that tour was canceled just a few days later after frontman John Popper was injured in a bus accident.
Big shout out to our friend, and talented photographer, Nick Durcholz of Farthingtonfauxtoe for these great pics.
