Why Are Gigantic Pink Snails Moving Across Louisville?

The term "seeing pink elephants" originated in the early part of the 20th century as euphemism for hallucinations one might see while intoxicated. But maybe we retire Jumbo and replace him with snails. I mean, the point of the idiom is hallucinations; can't they be anything?

Fortunately, we have examples to study in Louisville, and they are enormous. That's right, you don't have to be inebriated to see these gigantic, brightly-colored mollusks. But it's understandable to want to know why you might be seeing them, too.

Giant Pink Snails in Louisville

Seeing pink elephants is one thing (and I hope you never do), but giant pink snails? It's perfectly fine if you them in Louisville over the next several days. And they will be moving, alright, but with some help. This 35-snail exhibit is traveling 35 miles across Louisville, and for a very good reason. (There would almost have to be, right?)

The snails' "journey" began at Woodland Farms in the Louisville suburb of Goshen. They will continue their trek until they arrive at the 21C Museum Hotel downtown. They will be among the guests of honor at Steve's Derby Eve: A Darker Shade of Pink. The snails are also pink in support of the Norton Cancer Institute Breast Health Program which "provides comprehensive, accredited breast care services across Louisville and Southern Indiana, ranging from screening and diagnosis to treatment and support."

Each snail features a QR code which, when scanned, will provide migration updates, ways to support businesses that are involved in the endeavor, and a link to donate to the cause.
