Head out to Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve this Saturday, April 18, for a FREE Earth Day community celebration that’s all about getting outside, having fun, and learning a few easy ways to take better care of our planet. Whether you’ve got kids in tow or just want to enjoy some fresh air, there’s something here for everyone.

What To Expect At The Earth Day Celebration

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can explore interactive booths hosted by more than 20 local organizations that are passionate about sustainability and protecting the environment. Take part in hands-on activities, cool demonstrations, and simple tips you can actually use in your everyday life. It’s a great chance to learn something new without it feeling like a classroom.

Explore Nature At Wesselman Woods

The trails at Wesselman Woods will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving you access to more than four miles of scenic paths through one of the largest urban old-growth forests in the entire country. It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it’s right here in our backyard. Plus, the Welborn Baptist Foundation Nature Playscape will be open for the kids to climb, explore, and burn off some energy.

And no great celebration is complete without good food, right? Local food trucks will be set up outside the gates from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving up plenty of tasty options to fuel your day at the park.

For the folks at Wesselman Woods, Earth Day is more than just a time to go outside and enjoy a (hopefully) beautiful day with Mother Nature - although they certainly hope you do that. There's more to it, though. Wesselman Woods wants to celebrate nature, promote sustainability, and remind us all that we can (and should) make a difference in our community.

LOOK: Here's Why Indiana is Pretty Much the Best Place on Earth [As Told by Hoosiers]

Reddit user, u/youcanneverbanme recently asked their fellow Hoosiers in the Indiana subreddit what they liked about living here. The question received hundreds of responses and the vast majority of them were positive. Of course, there were some that were negative because there are sad people who are perpetually angry on the internet and want everyone to know it for some reason, but we won't concern ourselves with those. We want to focus on the good, and when it comes to the good, there's plenty of it to enjoy.
