2019 has been a historic, record-setting year for marching bands and music programs in southern Indiana. Tri-State bands have had one of the most successful seasons ever. That success continues for the EVSC, this time at the middle school level.

The band from Helfrich Park STEM Academy has been chosen to represent all Indiana middle school bands with a performance at the 2020 Indiana Music Education Association’s Professional Development Conference in Fort Wayne. This honor is given to only one Indiana middle school band each year. This honorable recognition is the first for an EVSC middle school band program. The students will have the opportunity to hear other performances from some of the state’s finest programs as well as see some of the industry’s top composers, conductors, and musicians.

Helfrich's band director is Mr. Doug Goodwin. We asked him to join us on the MY Morning Show and brag on this group of talented kids and to explain how huge, and rare, this honor is. You hear can hear our conversation below.

It's no easy, or cheap, task to send a large group of students on a trip like this. Securing buses, hotel accommodations, food and other necessities adds up quickly. The band has put together several fundraisers to help offset the cost of this trip and allow every student to go. I'm a parent of one of those kids and, believe me, it is not cheap. Here are some ways you can help.

  • Wednesday, December 4th - Giveback at the west side HACIENDA (located on Pearl Drive). Please present this certificate.
  • Saturday, December 7th - Giveback at the west side TWISTED TOMATO (located on Harmony Way).
  • Wednesday, December 18th - Helfrich Park's Winter Concert. They are selling reserved parking...there will be auction items...and there will be a cookie walk.
