These Horror Movies Still Scare Us! How Many Have You Seen?
These Horror Movies Are Decades Old, But They Still Give Us Nightmares
Halloween is right around the corner, and you know what that means. It's time to turn off the lights, grab some popcorn, and watch a movie that's probably going to make you regret turning off those lights in the first place.
Now, I love a good Halloween movie, but there's a big difference between a movie that's a little spooky and one that has you checking behind the shower curtain before you go to bed.
I recently came across a post from Pubity on Instagram talking about classic horror movies that never seem to lose their ability to scare us. It got me thinking about how some of these movies have been around for decades, but somehow they're still just as creepy as the first time we watched them.
And the funny thing is, we know exactly what's going to happen, but we still get scared!
Some Horror Movies Just Never Get Old
Think about Halloween from 1978. Michael Myers doesn't even have to say a word to be terrifying. All he has to do is stand there in that creepy white mask, and suddenly you're looking over your shoulder. Not to mention that iconic theme song. You hear the first few notes, and you already know something bad is about to happen.
Then there's The Exorcist from 1973. This one is a completely different kind of scary. We're talking about a movie that had people absolutely terrified when it first came out, and more than 50 years later, it still manages to freak people out.
And we can't forget A Nightmare on Elm Street from 1984. I mean, imagine watching a movie where the bad guy comes after you in your dreams. You're telling me I can't even go to sleep to get away from him? No thank you!
Of course, there's also The Shining from 1980, which proves you don't need a masked killer chasing people around to make a movie terrifying. Sometimes all it takes is a creepy hotel, a little suspense, and Jack Nicholson.
And if you grew up watching horror movies in the '90s, there's a good chance you remember Scream from 1996. That Ghostface mask is recognizable just about anywhere, and I'm sure that movie made quite a few people think twice about answering a phone call.
What Makes These Movies So Scary?
Here's what I think is interesting. Some of these movies came out before we had all the crazy special effects and technology that filmmakers use today.
But somehow, they still work.
I think a lot of it comes down to the suspense. Sometimes what you don't see is even scarier than what's actually happening on the screen.
Plus, there's something about watching a horror movie when you're home alone that makes every little sound in your house seem suspicious.
Was that the refrigerator making a noise, or is Michael Myers standing in my kitchen?
