This year is flying by. It is already time for the pools to close, and school is in full swing. There is one weekend that is the traditional, although not official, end of summer, and that's Labor Day.

What is Labor Day?

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September each year. It was created to honor the contributions and achievements of American workers and the labor movement. The holiday became official in 1894, following years of advocacy for better working conditions, fair wages, and reasonable hours during the industrial era.

Why Labor Day Exists

  • Originated from labor union efforts in the late 19th century.
  • Recognizes the economic and social impact of workers.
  • Symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans.

By closing for the holiday, Costco allows its workers to take a much-needed break, recharge, and enjoy summer festivities. Many associates look forward to this gesture, as it’s a rare opportunity for retail employees to have guaranteed time off to get ready for one of the busiest seasons of the year.
