The History of King Cakes and Where to Find One in Evansville This Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras will be here before you know it (Fat Tuesday is February 17th), and folks will be lining up to get some gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans & rice. Not me though. As much as I would like to, my tummy just can’t handle the spice – so I have to pass on the Cajun food. There is one Mardi Gras tradition, however, that I am totally down for – the delicious King Cake!
Why King Cake Is Tied To Mardi Gras Season
The King Cake is more than just a colorful, sprinkle-covered pastry – there’s a lot of history baked into that oval-shaped treat (along with the baby). This iconic Mardi Gras cake traces its roots back to the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6, also known as Twelfth Night. That date marks the end of Christmas and the official kickoff of the Mardi Gras season. From that point on, it’s fair game to indulge until Fat Tuesday rolls around.
What The Colors And Shape Of King Cake Represent
Traditionally, the cake’s oval shape represents the journey of the Three Kings, and the signature colors aren’t just for show. Purple stands for justice, green represents faith, and gold (or yellow) symbolizes power. And then there’s the part everyone talks about: the tiny plastic baby hidden inside. Finding it is considered good luck – but it also comes with responsibility. Whoever gets the baby is on the hook for bringing the next King Cake to keep the party going.

I once received a King Cake from Louisiana (from a place charmingly called Tubbs Hardware, which also sells Cajun goodies), and the message on the box summed it up perfectly: it’s about tradition, celebration, and sharing something joyful with the people around you. That spirit translates just as well here in the Tri-State.
