A Massive Cave System in Kentucky

Did you know that Kentucky's very own Mammoth Cave holds the record for the longest cave system in the world?  It's true, and it keeps getting longer! In fact, in September 2022 cave researchers discovered 6 more miles of passages, so they're constantly discovering new things about Mammoth Cave.   Currently, the cave system is 426 miles long!  If you laid the entire cave system out end to end it would stretch from Evansville and almost make it to Detroit Michigan (that's a whole lot of cave to explore)!

A Massive Cave With a New Massive Tour

Mammoth Cave's name is definitely appropriate because the cave really is a mammoth.  Mammoth Cave offers many different tour options, and Mammoth Cave National Park just announced a new cave tour that is so massive, it will take about 4 hours to complete.  The coolest part is you'll get to see all of the iconic landmarks inside of Mammoth Cave, things like the River Styx, Gothic Avenue, Giant's Coffin, and more.

Here is what Mammoth Cave National Park had to say about the new tour:

Experience the history of Mammoth Cave as never before! The Grand Historic tour is a four-hour trip that provides visitors the experience of traveling through the past as they learn about those who first discovered the cave, its first uses, early tourism, and the cave exploration that continues today. Visit some of the cave's most iconic landmarks such as Gothic Avenue, Giant's Coffin, the Tuberculosis Huts, Bottomless Pit, Fat Man's Misery, River Styx, and Mammoth Dome. It's an adventure thousands of years in the making!
Duration: 4 hours
Distance: 4 miles (3.2 km)
Total Stairs: 640, including 155 at Mammoth Dome
Difficulty: Difficult
Ages: 6yrs and up. Youth under the age of 16 years, must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.
Reservations for tour tickets are not required but are highly recommended because tours do sell out. To learn more about tours at Mammoth Cave and to make a reservation, check out this link! https://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/cave-tours.htm
How freaking cool would that be?  This is definitely the tour I'll be taking the next time I get over to Mammoth Cave National Park.

See Incredible Photos from Inside Kentucky's Mammoth Cave

The world's longest cave system is located in Kentucky, and it is absolutely worth the short drive from the Tri-State to take a tour and see these incredible sights. Here are some photos taken by Photo by Kevin L. Bruner during a trip to Mammoth Cave.
