Strange January Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Indiana

January is a weird month in general and this year you really don't know what you're getting yourself into weather wise. I know that Illinois has it's January reputation but apparently Indiana does too, so let's recap. Cold, gray, and unpredictable usually come to mind. Digging a little deeper you'll find that January in the Hoosier State is actually full of strange history, wild weather moments, and some truly random trivia you probably didn’t know.

Let's Start With What We Know

Indiana Weather has an attitude in January. If you feel like Indiana can’t decide what season it wants to be in during January, you’re not wrong. The state has seen everything from deep freezes to surprise warm-ups that can be record breaking, all within the same month.

Indiana is no stranger to historic January cold snaps, with temperatures plunging well below zero during Arctic blasts. At the same time, there have been January days warm enough to melt snow and make you question your winter coat choices. One day it’s snow boots, the next it’s a hoodie. Very on brand for Indiana. When we started this month we were going on walks outside and now going on a walk outside doesn't seem to be in the cards for the next several weeks at least.

The Blizzard That Hoosiers Still Talk About

One of Indiana’s most infamous weather moments happened in January 1978. The Blizzard of ’78 dumped massive amounts of snow across the state, creating drifts taller than cars and shutting down roads for days.

Schools closed, travel stopped, and National Guard troops were called in to help. For many Hoosiers, January automatically brings up stories from parents or grandparents who still swear it was “the worst winter ever.”

January Was Big for Indiana History

January hasn’t just been cold, it’s been historic. Our fond state became a part of the United States. Indiana officially became the 19th state on January 11, 1816. That means every January is basically Indiana’s birthday month, even if it doesn’t get nearly enough attention.

The state’s early winters were brutal, especially for settlers who had little protection from the elements. January played a major role in shaping Indiana’s tough-it-out reputation.

Cabin Fever Is a Real Thing Here

January in Indiana is peak cabin fever season, and there’s science behind it. With fewer daylight hours and colder temperatures, many Hoosiers feel more sluggish or restless this time of year.

That’s one reason basketball season feels extra important in January. From high school gyms to college arenas, Hoosiers have long used sports as a way to survive the winter blues. Basketball might be a Hoosier staple for the state but this year (2026) it's a year football fans will remember as IU won the First National Championship going undefeated all season long finishing the year 16-0.

Random January Trivia You Can’t Unknow

Here’s a fun one: January is one of the snowiest months in Indiana, but not always the coldest. That title often belongs to February. I have a February birthday and it's always a bummer because February is known for it's ice spells and bitter coldness. While January on the other hand gets the white fluffy snows that are great for snowman building and don't make it a hazard getting from place to place.

Another strange fact? Indiana once experienced a January tornado. While rare, winter tornadoes have happened, proving once again that Indiana weather refuses to follow rules.

January in Indiana Is Never Boring

It may not be the flashiest month, but January in Indiana is full of surprises. From legendary blizzards to statehood anniversaries and unpredictable weather mood swings, this month has way more personality than it gets credit for.

So the next time January feels slow or gloomy, just remember—you’re living through one of the strangest and most unpredictable months Indiana has to offer.
