Evansville Police Department’s Community Academy Returns for Fall 2026

Have you ever been curious about what goes on behind the scenes at the Evansville Police Department? Maybe you've wondered how officers train, what specialized units actually do, or even considered a career in law enforcement. If so, the Evansville Police Department has a unique opportunity that offers an inside look at the people and programs that help keep our community safe.

The EPD's Fall 2026 Community Academy is now accepting applications, and it's completely free.

What is the EPD Community Academy

Formerly known as the Citizen's Academy, this popular program gives Evansville-area residents the chance to learn directly from the officers and professionals who serve the community every day. The academy runs from August 11 through November 17 and is open to anyone aged 15 and older. Participants under the age of 18 are welcome, but they must attend with a parent or guardian.

Classes are held every Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the CK Newsome Center in downtown Evansville. Each week focuses on a different division within the police department, giving participants a better understanding of the many responsibilities that go far beyond responding to emergency calls.

Meet EPD's Specialized Units

One of the biggest highlights of the Community Academy is the chance to experience some of the department's specialized units up close. Participants can expect demonstrations and presentations from the S.W.A.T. Team, K-9 Unit, Bomb Squad, Narcotics and VIPER Units, Horse Patrol, and Crime Scene Unit. The academy also includes tours of the Dispatch Center and jail, along with sessions covering Sex Crimes, Domestic Violence investigations, Homeless Outreach efforts, and the department's Community Policing Officers (CPOs).
