When I saw that 25,000 Hoosiers could receive extra tax refunds, I got a little excited. Could this be the little bonus that we all need? How do I know if I'm one of the chosen ones that are eligible? I did the research, and maybe this will answer the questions that we all have.

2025 Tax Deadline

We are less than one month away from the deadline to file our 2024 tax returns. Usually, I have ours filed but this year, I'm so far behind. If you are filing taxes you should know that the deadline is April 15, 2025. I say if because apparently, some people don't file their taxes every year.

Did You Forget 2021?

Now, we all know that the pandemic years were kind of a blur. The IRS estimates that over 1.1 million Americans did not file a tax return for 2021. That also means that there is a lot of money out there just waiting to be claimed. In most cases, we actually have three years to file taxes. This was new information to me. So, if you didn't file a 1040 for 2021, you could have a refund waiting for you. Of course, if you didn't file taxes after 2021 or you owe child support, the refund will go to the appropriate agency.

How to Claim 2021 Tax Refund

You will need certain documents in order to file your 2021 return. The deadline for this is also April 15, 2025. You can find the forms you'll need at IRS.gov Forms & instructions page or by calling toll-free 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Create or log in to IRS Individual Online Account: The fastest and easiest way for people to view, download or print tax records and transcripts is to create or log in to their Individual Online Account at IRS.gov. Request copies of key documents: Taxpayers who are missing Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 or 5498 for the years 2021, 2022 or 2023 can request copies from their employer, bank or other payers. Get transcript by mail: Taxpayers who are unable to get those missing forms from their employer or other payers and cannot access their Individual Online Account can get a tax return or tax account transcript mailed to them by calling the automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946. Request a wage and income transcript: Another option is for people to file Form 4506-T with the IRS to request a wage and income transcript.

KEEP READING: 40 Real Indiana Towns with Quirky, Weird, and Funny Names

Outside the major cities, the Hoosier state is full of tiny little towns you've probably passed through on your way to one of those cities. Most of them are likely 100 to 150 years old, or older, and have been around far longer than the large metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Evansville. Typically, they were started by early settlers who found their way to the state and decided to make it home. Eventually, others would join them, and a community was formed. Over time, as the surrounding areas grew, most of them were folded into those areas and governed by the nearest city or county's governing body officially making them "unincorporated," meaning they did not have their own formally organized municipal government.

A scroll through Wikipedia's long list of unincorporated communities in Indiana shows several of them have names that by today's standards would be considered weird, quirky, or just downright right funny. These are my 40 favorities.
