I69 Exit Ramp To Lloyd Expressway Reopens Early For Drivers
Evansville Drivers, Good News: I-69 to Westbound Lloyd Ramp Reopening Early
If you’ve been navigating the construction maze around I-69 and the Lloyd Expressway in Evansville, there’s some welcome news this week. The southbound I-69 exit ramp to westbound Lloyd is expected to reopen on or after Tuesday, April 7 about 10 days earlier than expected.
That’s a big win for Evansville commuters who use this busy stretch every day.
What’s Changing at the Ramp?
When the ramp reopens, drivers will notice it looks very different.
The old crescent-shaped merge ramp is gone and has been replaced with a new signalized T-shaped ramp design. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it mirrors the setup already in place at the northbound I-69 to eastbound Lloyd ramp** near the Epworth area.
The new traffic signal is designed to help drivers more safely merge onto westbound Lloyd traffic and also prepare for the future displaced left turn lane at Cross Pointe.
For drivers already traveling eastbound on the Lloyd, this is your heads-up: watch for the new traffic light just west of I-69 and be ready to stop. That’s going to be a big adjustment for people used to flowing through that area.
West Side Closures to Know This Week
There’s also fresh construction activity happening on Evansville’s west side.
A 14-day closure at Schutte Road is expected to begin on or after Monday, April 6, while a 30-day closure at Boehne Camp Road is set to start on or after Tuesday, April 7.
Both closures affect the intersections south of the Lloyd only. Local traffic will still be able to access homes and businesses up to the construction zone, but through traffic will need to find another route.
Suggested detours include:
- Middle Mount Vernon Road
- Broadway Avenue
- Middle Mount Vernon for Boehne Camp access
Why It Matters for Evansville
These upgrades are all part of the Lloyd4U West Side safety and efficiency project, which aims to improve traffic flow and reduce crash risks along one of Evansville’s busiest corridors.
Eventually, Schutte Road will move to a Restricted Crossing U-Turn design, limiting northbound and southbound traffic to right-in, right-out only.
Bottom line for Evansville drivers: plan ahead, allow extra time, and stay alert in those work zones this week. The early ramp reopening is great news, but the west side closures will definitely have an impact on the morning commute.
