If You Are a Cat Mom, Like Myself, You Need to Know About Catios

Okay, What Even Is a Catio?
If you have not heard the term yet, let me be the one to introduce you to your new obsession. A catio is essentially a patio, but for your cat. It is an enclosed outdoor space that lets your cat experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the outside world without the risks of letting them roam freely. Which takes it from me is absolutely purfect. See what I did there. Anyway, if I had the room for one, I would have one for my two cats. Having a balcony helps a little bit so they can go outside, but then Penny ends up on the roof, and that’s a different story for another day.

I found out about these through a friend who built one for her cats, and I have not stopped thinking about it since I’ve seen her pictures. As a cat mom myself, I immediately understood the appeal. My friends cats look like they are soaking up the sun and having the best time. Of we all want our fur babies to be happy and enriched, but we also want them safe. A catio is basically the perfect solution to that problem.

Why Cat Moms and Cat Dads Are Obsessed
Here is the thing about indoor cats. They are safe, yes, but they can also get bored, restless, and understimulated. Cats are natural hunters and explorers, and being cooped up inside all day does not always satisfy those instincts. A catio gives them a place to watch birds, feel the breeze, lay in the sun, and just be a cat without you having to worry about them getting hit by a car, getting into a fight with another animal, or getting lost. I would love to be able to let my cats outside comfortably without worrying about such things, but for right now, they are my couch cuddlers.
It is enrichment without the risk, and once you see a cat in a catio for the first time, you will immediately understand why this trend is taking off the way it is.

What Do They Actually Look Like and How Do You Build One?
This is where it gets fun because catios come in every shape, size, and budget you can imagine. And my friend's setup is honestly the perfect example of how simple and affordable it can actually be.
She built hers using wire cube panels that she ordered right off Amazon. You know those modular wire grid panels people use to build storage shelves and closet organizers? That is exactly what she used, and they work perfectly for this. She connected them together to build an enclosed structure, laid down some artificial turf grass on the bottom to give it that outdoor feel, and added a cozy blanket, some toys, and just like that her cats had their own little outdoor sanctuary. The whole thing sits right on her porch and honestly looks adorable.

Just look at these photos and tell me those cats are not living their absolute best life. One is perched up watching the world go by and the other one is completely melted into that blanket in the sunshine without a single care in the world. I want to be that cat.
The beauty of this approach is that it is completely customizable and you do not need to be a carpenter or spend a fortune. You can start small with a basic enclosure and add to it over time. Some people attach them directly to a window or door so the cat can come and go on their own. Others go all out and build elaborate multi level structures with tunnels, shelves, and hammocks that honestly look more fun than my own apartment.
You can also buy pre made catio kits online if the DIY route is not your thing, or hire someone to build one custom. There are entire online communities dedicated to catio builds with free plans and tutorials, so the barrier to entry is much lower than you might think.
Is It Worth It?
Ask any cat owner who has built one, and the answer is always the same. Absolutely yes. Cats who have access to a catio tend to be calmer, more content, and more physically active. And honestly, there is something really peaceful about watching your cat lounge in the sun or chirp at a bird from the safety of their own little outdoor sanctuary.
My friend built hers on a budget, and her cats took to it immediately. Now she says she cannot imagine not having one, and I fully believe her.
So Should You Build One?
If you are a cat mom or cat dad and you have any kind of outdoor space, even a small balcony or a ground-floor window, a catio is absolutely worth looking into. Your cat will thank you in the only way cats know how, which is probably by ignoring you slightly less than usual. Would you build one?🐱☀️
