New 2024 Indiana Law Prohibits Students From Using Wireless Devices in Schools
Starting this year, students in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) will have to tuck away their phones during class time. That's right, no more texting, scrolling, or snapping during lessons.
New School Year, New Indiana Laws
I know that a lot of students are used to having cell phones and earbuds on them at all times, even during the school year. However, a new Indiana law passed that bans these and other wireless communication devices during classes. This includes passing periods. The definition of what isn't allowed is below. We will probably hear the term WCDs a lot, so we need to know what that means.
Personal Wireless Communication Devices (“WCDs”) include, but are not limited to: cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, airpods, tablet and laptop computers, gaming devices, etc.

How Do I Contact My Child in an Emergency?
As a parent of a teenager, I'm used to getting his random texts throughout the day. So, this is going to take some adjusting for fellow parents. If you need to get a hold of your student during school hours, the best bet is to call the school office. They can send a message to your child. Our kids will be able to use their phones during lunch and after school.
What Happens if Students Break the Rules?
Don't worry, the EVSC isn't out to punish students. The goal is to help them stay on track, and not get in trouble. If a student gets caught using their phone in class, they'll likely have a chat with an administrator and their phone will be locked up for the rest of the day. But remember, repeated offenses could lead to more serious consequences.
