Beloved Evansville Bakery to Reopen with Original Recipes
When you pass a gas station, you probably don't feel the need to stop in and see if they have fresh bakery donuts. That is, of course, unless you are familiar with The Windmill Bakery, which was a hidden treasure inside a gas station.
Where Did the Donuts Go?
It was a cold day in 2015 when regular customers of the Circle K on Highway 41 North discovered that the donuts were not the same. The Windmill Bakery closed, and the new owners had donuts delivered from a bakery in Kentucky. This was a dark day for me. When I moved out of the Tri-State for a few years, we had to stop there anytime we were in town for a visit.

Is Bigfoot Really a Donut?
One of the special donuts the Windmill made was in the shape of a giant foot. Yes, bigfoot size. My absolute favorite was the glazed and chocolate-iced cinnamon rolls. They were as big as my face and worth every calorie.
Our Donut Prayers Answered
Recently, I noticed some remodeling going on. Then I heard some rumors about The Windmill Bakery moving back in. Upon a Facebook search - why yes, I am a super sleuth, I found this: The Windmill Marathon & Bakery! I reached out to make sure that I was not being catfished.
'We will be opening the bakery sometime in early August. We will be operating off of the original recipes from the 80s and 90s. The new owner is the same baker/family that started the Windmill Bakery back in the 80s."
It's a Christmas miracle! The gas station is still open during the remodel.
