Vietnam-Era Huey Helicopter Offering Flights at Evansville Wartime Museum
The Evansville Wartime Museum is giving visitors a once-in-a-lifetime chance to ride in a fully restored Vietnam-era Huey helicopter.
A Living Symbol of Service and Sacrifice
The aircraft, officially known as the UH-1H Iroquois but more commonly called the “Huey,” is one of the most iconic military helicopters in American history. Its presence in Vietnam was as common as its unforgettable whop-whop-whop sound. More than just a machine, it became a symbol of courage, camaraderie, and the challenges faced by a generation of American troops.
Flight Times and How to Ride
On Saturday, August 9, and Sunday, August 10, the museum will host the Columbus Indiana Huey for two full days of public flights, allowing guests to step into the boots of those who flew during the Vietnam War.
Flights will be available both days from around 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., running continuously while weather permits. The rides are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and tickets can be purchased on-site during the event. There are no advance reservations, so arriving early is strongly recommended.
Each flight gives passengers a rare glimpse into what it was like for military personnel who relied on this aircraft for transportation, medevac missions, and frontline operations.
What to Expect at the Museum During the Event
While ground tours of the Huey won’t be available due to continuous flights, the rest of the museum will be open for visitors. Regular museum admission applies, and there’s a separate fee for Huey rides. Veterans and active-duty military personnel receive discounted museum admission.
Alongside the flights, guests can explore the museum’s impressive collection of World War II-era vehicles, aircraft, and local military history displays. It's a full day of learning, honoring, and connecting with the stories that shaped our world.
