Your Secret Santa probably meant well by gifting you a super-cute metallic mug from Starbucks. Or, they were secretly hoping that you would burn your lips off. Hopefully, that is not the case for you, but there is a specific mug from Starbucks that has been recalled.

Starbucks Holiday Mugs Recalled After Overheating Incidents Caused Burns

Here's a little heads-up for anyone who snagged a cute Starbucks mug during the 2023 holiday season craze. There's a recall on some of those festive cups, and for a reason that's no fun at all: overheating and causing burns. We're talking about mugs included in four specific gift sets sold at Target, Walmart, and even military retail outlets nationwide.

The recall involves ceramic mugs with a metallic coating that were included in four different Starbucks Holiday Gift Sets sold in November and December of 2023. These mugs came in both 11oz and 16oz sizes and were part of the following gift sets:

  • Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs
  • Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug
  • Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug
  • Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug

Why the Recall?

The big concern is that these mugs can overheat or even break if you microwave them or fill them with super-hot liquids. This has already led to 12 incidents of people getting burned or cut, with some injuries requiring medical attention. I have had previous bad luck with microwaves, but not from this mug.

What to Do If You Have One of These Mugs

First things first: stop using the mug immediately. This isn't the time to risk a scalding surprise. Here's what you can do next:

  • Return it to the store: Head back to the store where you bought the gift set and return the mug for a full refund. They might offer you cash or store credit depending on their policy.
  • Get a refund from Nestle: If returning to the store isn't your jam, you can also get a refund directly from Nestle. Head over to their website https://www.nestleusa.com/info/contact-us-landing, scroll down to "Leave Us a Message," and follow the prompts for "Complaint" and then "Recall." You'll need a picture of the mug or the gift set identifier code, but you won't need a receipt. Once they receive your info, they'll send you a check for the full amount.
