Major Winter Storm Could Bring Heavy Snow This Weekend

If you’ve been watching the forecast, or you've taken a look outside your window, here’s what you need to know. A significant winter storm is expected to move into the Ohio Valley this weekend, and it could bring 7 to 13 inches of snow to our area, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky.

Forecasters say those totals could still increase. The snow is expected to be dry, fluffy, and heavy, which means it can pile up quickly and make travel conditions worse in a short amount of time.

Impacts Could Last Beyond the Weekend

This isn’t expected to be a quick hit-and-run storm. The impacts could linger for several days after the system moves out, affecting travel, business operations, and everyday routines. Roads may remain slick, and cleanup could take time.

Now is the time to prepare, before conditions start to deteriorate.

What You Should Have Ready at Home

Having a few key items on hand can make a big difference if the power goes out or travel becomes difficult:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • A first-aid kit
  • Blankets and warm clothing
  • Non-perishable food and bottled water
  • Portable chargers or power banks
  • A NOAA Weather Radio for reliable alerts during outages

Don’t Forget Your Vehicle Emergency Kit

If you need to be on the road, make sure your vehicle is ready too:

  •  Ice scraper and snow brush
  • A small shovel
  • Sand or cat litter for added traction
  • Jumper cables
  • Extra blankets or warm layers
  • A full tank of gas before the storm arrives

What Else You Can Do

There are some simple things you can do at home without stepping foot outside. Simple things like saving power, charging mobile devices and flashlights, opening the cabinet under your sink to make sure the pipes don't freeze, keep water dripping in faucets, and getting blankets in the dryer to stay warm.

Stay safe, stay warm, and keep an eye on the forecast as the weekend gets closer.
