Finding Warmth In Winter At Newburgh’s Showplace Cinema
How a Movie Theater Became My Unexpected Winter Escape
I have to admit, winter months kind of make me go a little crazy. I love being outdoors, and the bitter cold we’ve been dealing with makes that pretty hard to enjoy. After the holidays slow down, you’re suddenly stuck inside your house. At first, that feels cozy and relaxing… but after a while, it starts to catch up with you. At least, it definitely does with me.
When I’m not outside moving my body doing things like biking, hiking, walking, planting something, or even just reading a book in the park—I start to feel off. Honestly, a little manic. I truly believe winter depression is a real thing. Sure, there are parts of winter that are nice: big puffy coats, snug sweaters, reading by the fire. But there’s also digging your car out of snow, not seeing plants grow, missing the sun on your face, and forgetting what fresh-cut grass even smells like.
I’ve realized I’m someone who thrives on nature and sunlight, and winter takes a lot of that away.
But lately, I’ve noticed myself forming a new habit. Over the past two weeks, I’ve been to the movie theater in Newburgh multiple times—and I didn’t even realize why at first. Showplace Cinema in Newburgh has become weirdly comforting for me. Sitting in a dark theater, focused on a story for a couple of hours, completely takes my mind off that “stuck inside” feeling.
It’s not the outdoors, but it’s an escape. And in the middle of winter, sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
