Fewer Pumpkins in 2023

One sure sign that fall is officially here is when we start seeing pumpkins everywhere.  One of my favorite traditions is heading out to a local pumpkin patch and scouting the perfect pumpkins to decorate my front porch with.  However this year we may see fewer pumpkins available after the weather this year has impacted the pumpkin harvest.

According to ABC, the pumpkin issues are impacting farms across the country.

Vibrant orange gourds are a signature mark of the start of autumn, but the perfect fall pumpkin could be harder to find this season as farmers warn of shortages due to weather.

From New Jersey to Kentucky and down to Texas, farmers have battled a bevy of conditions that could squash some pumpkin plans.

National news show, Good Morning America featured a few farms from across the country to talk about the issues with pumpkins this year, and one farm featured was Huyck Farms in Paducah, Kentucky.

Featured on Good Morning America was Nathan Huyck who owns Huyck Farms.  He told Good Morning America that the 10 inches of rain Paducah got in August definitely impacted his pumpkins.

In Paducah, Kentucky, summer heat was followed by heavy rains that amounted to 200% of their normal annual rainfall in the last three months.

Nathan Huyck, the owner of Huyck Farms, told ABC News "I ended up having 10 inches of rain in August here. I think last year, the year before that, we had 1 inch of rain in August. So it's quite a difference."

If you're planning on putting pumpkins out this year or carving jack-o-lanterns, you may want to get your pumpkins early, and if you can, support local pumpkin patches and farms.  If you want to check out Huyck Farms and everything they're up to this season, you can find them online, here.
