I know the thought of winter weather right now is ridiculous, but it will be here before you know it.

When the snow and ice arrive, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's fleet of snow plows will be out and about, both pre-treating and clearing the roads. Last year, the KYTC introduced a new program that not only gave the plows themselves a fun design but also kept folks aware of winter weather driving safety.

High school students, get ready once again to "Paint the Plow". Here are last year's designs.

52 schools participated in last year's program. Schools from District 2 that submitted designs included Hopkins County Central, Dawson Springs, University Heights Academy, and Christian County. And yes, once your students' design is approved, KYTC will arrange for the plow blade to be dropped off at your school and picked up when the blade is finished.

Officials say these are some things to keep in mind:

  • Designs and messages should focus on road safety, winter weather
  • The design can include the school logo and school colors
  • Consider the following slogans for a safety theme. Other safe driving messages are welcome.
    • “No Device in Snow & Ice”
    • “Slow Down when Snow’s Down”
    • “Snow means Slow”
  • Use a bright background
  • The designs must be PG in nature
  • They will not include political, partisan, violent, or lewd images
  • No copyright, pop-culture references, movies, songs, celebrities, etc.
  • Participants agree to have photos/videos of the plows and participating students to be used for promotional purposes.

Painting guidelines:

The blade is approximately 12’ wide and 4’ high
The top foot of the blade is blocked from view due to a rubber strip
Use enamel paints with bright backgrounds
A final clear coat will help extend the life of the painting
No materials other than paint can be applied to the plow blade
Do not paint reflective or rubber material
Schools are responsible for providing their own paint and supplies.

The application process has begun; the deadline is Friday, September 6th. APPLY HERE!
