A recent study lists the Hoosier state in the bottom seven of the most patriotic states in America. So, we have to figure out why Indiana is one of the least patriotic states in America.

Is Indiana Really One of the Least Patriotic States in America?

If you believe the experts and their research, Indiana is number 44 on the list of 2025's Most Patriotic States. Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and New York are also in the bottom 7. This study is based on military engagement and civic engagement.

  • Civic Engagement includes participation in voting, volunteering, community service, and involvement in political processes.
  • Military Engagement includes support for the military and veterans. States that have a strong presence of military bases, high enlistment rates, or provide robust benefits and services to veterans are often regarded as patriotic.

Which State is the Most Patriotic?

And the title of the Most Patriotic State in America goes to...Virginia. Here's what the research tells us about the residents of Virginia.

For every 100,000 civilians in Virginia, there are over 1,850 active-duty military personnel, the third-most in the country. And for every 1,000 civilians, there are over 103 veterans, the second-most in the country. Old Dominion is also patriotic on the civic side. It has a high voter turnout rate, with 72.9% of residents having voted in the 2024 presidential election, compared to the national average of 66%. To top things off, Virginia has the fifth-highest number of peace corps volunteers per capita, and it is one of the many states that require standalone course in civics for high school graduation.
