When Will We See the First Frost in Southern Indiana this Fall?
It's 95 Degrees Outside - Please Enjoy This PSL
It's hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that today, August 24th, Starbucks officially released their Fall flavors for 2021 because the high temperature is in the mid-90s. The only thing I like in the mid-90s is my R&B. But, whether you like it or not - whether you're ready for it or not - Fall is coming, and it's really not that far away. One indication that Fall has officially arrived is the appearance of frost.

Knowing when to expect the first frost, or light freeze of the Fall is especially important for those who take care of plants or gardens. This information helps you prepare to protect your tender plants during the chilly fall evenings. And, it's also important for those who are over their faces melting off when they walk outside and those who appreciate a good hoodie.
When Is the First Frost of 2021?
So, when can we expect to see the first frost of the Fall? Let's turn to the Old Farmer's Almanac for the answer.
First Frost Dates for Southern Indiana
- Evansville, IN - October 31st
- Newburgh, IN - October 19th
- Mt. Vernon, IN - October 31st
To the Handy Dandy Frost Calculator Thingy!
The Farmer's Almanac has made it really easy to find the frost date for your area - enter your city, state, or zip code into this handy-dandy frost calculator thingy and you'll find out what you want to know.
It's interesting to me that the dates can be so different for areas that are only 15-30 minutes apart, not that I would claim to know the first thing about weather and this kind of stuff - that is way above my pay grade.

Srsly, How Did They Come Up With These Dates?
Keep in mind that these dates are just estimates that the Farmer's Almanac has calculated based on data they gather from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. According to the Farmer's Almanac, frost is "predicted when air temperatures reach 32°F (0°C), but because it is colder closer to the ground, a frost may occur even when air temperatures are just above freezing."
