The cover photo on the Evansville-Vanderburgh Central Dispatch Facebook page pretty much sums up the gift of a 9-1-1 Operator. 'The calm voice in the dark night / The golden glue that holds it all together.' The dispatcher is not only the lifeline for anyone that calls 9-1-1, but they are also gathering information to keep our First Responders safe.

Is The Scene Safe?

This is one of the most difficult parts of sending assistance to any type of emergency call. Dispatchers need every detail of information to relay to the the officers, EMS, and fire departments heading into any call. With 9-1-1 calls of a possible house explosion, many quick actions have to be taken care of, along with answering any other incoming calls.

2022 Dispatchers Of The Year

Even though the incident just happened last month, our awesome dispatch crew has already been recognized as the 2022 'Dispatchers Of The Year' from the  Indiana Fire Chiefs Association. And, the calls don't take a time-out for award ceremonies, as Mayor Lloyd Winnecke witnessed while he was there.

Even during an award presentation, Evansville-Vanderburgh Central Dispatch remains focused on keeping our city safe.
The entire department was recognized as 2022 “Dispatchers of the Year” at the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association award ceremony for their response after the Weinbach Avenue explosion.
We delivered the award to the department this morning. As you can see from the photos, our presentation was put on hold while dispatchers provided details of a vehicle crash to nearby first responders.
We’re proud of our dispatchers. Thank you for your continued service.

Central Dispatch is made up of 42 employees including a director, deputy director, office/finance manager, 7 supervisors, 1 communications specialist, and 31 9-1-1 operators. Telecommunicators are members of Teamsters Local 215.

10 of the Most Ridiculous 9-1-1 Calls from EvansvilleWatch

If you hear sirens and want to know what's going on, EvansvilleWatch on Facebook is the best place to look. They do an excellent job of listening to the police scanner in the Vanderburgh and Warrick county areas and posting updates as they come in. Most of the calls are routine, but I found several that had me shaking my head!
