Evansville Could Soon Honor Its Military Legacy With A Ship
Evansville Could Receive a Huge Honor at Sea
Evansville may soon be recognized in a truly historic way! We are eagerly waiting for approval for a U.S. Navy warship to be named after our city. It’s an effort that’s gaining momentum and shining a spotlight on Evansville’s proud military past.
Honoring a City That Answered the Call
Mayor Stephanie Terry says she’s proud to join Kris Holzmeyer, who has helped lead the charge to recognize Evansville’s rich military history. This push isn’t just about naming a ship — it’s about honoring generations of Evansville men and women who served their country, both overseas and right here at home.
Evansville’s Powerful Role in World War II
During World War II, Evansville became a major player in the war effort. The city built Landing Ship Tanks used during the D-Day invasion, produced thousands of fighter planes, ammunition, and refurbished Sherman tanks. Thousands of Hoosiers worked in factories and shipyards to support American troops on the front lines.
That legacy is exactly why leaders believe the name Evansville belongs on a U.S. Navy warship honoring a city that played a critical role when the country needed it most.
Community Leaders Rally Behind the Effort
That legacy is why this effort has strong support today. Mayor Terry thanked Congressman Mark Messmer, Senator Todd Young, and many others for championing the idea of naming a Navy warship after Evansville — a meaningful way to honor those who served both on the battlefield and behind the scenes.
A Name That Would Sail with Pride
If approved, a U.S. Navy warship named Evansville would serve as a powerful reminder of our city’s commitment, sacrifice, and service. It would be a proud moment for the community — seeing the name Evansville sailing the seas and carrying our history with it.
