We hear updated statistics nearly every week about food insecurity and how the cost of living just keeps going up. These issues don't just affect humans, pets in low-income homes need assistance too.

Now, you might just think that if you can't afford a pet, then you should not have one. Yes, if you can't afford the necessities for your family, it is not the right time to adopt. But what happens when you already have furry family members and then someone loses a job or is injured and can't work?

What is Paw Street Inc?

I recently found out about an Evansville, Indiana nonprofit that specializes in assisting low-income families that have pets in Posey, Vanderburgh, Warrick, or Gibson Counties. Paw Street Inc. has a mission to keep pets with their families, even through financial hardships. This also helps ease the strain of our overcrowded shelters.

What Kind of Assistance is Offered?

If your family is having a difficult time keeping human food on the table, chances are your furry family members are hungry too. Paw Street is able to assist qualified families with pet food, supplies, non-emergency vet care, and supplies. They even offer humans information about other assistance programs for low-income or homeless families.

Fix a Fence

This is the program that caught my attention. If you own your home, and you meet specific requirements, Paw Street may be able to help fix your fence. If your dog has found a hole and can escape the safety of his yard, the Fix a Fence assistance could help with that.
