Depending on how old you are, the thought of bison may trigger memories of playing Oregon Trail back in middle school and hoping that your family didn't die of dysentery.

You Don't Have to Play Oregon Trail to See Bison

Fortunately, no one really died of dysentery in 8th-grade Computer Lab and we don't have to time travel back to the days of early settlers to experience the sight of bison in the wild, although if you spot one, you do want to be sure that you keep your distance.

The US Forest Service and Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, which is situated in parts of Western Kentucky and Tennessee, recently shared some exciting news. The first baby bison of the season has been born.

Spring has officially arrived at the South Bison Range with the first baby bison of the season. These adorable little calves weigh approximately 25-40 lbs and are often called "red dogs" because of their color.

Where Are the Bison?

The South Bison Range is adjacent to the Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway and is located in Bumpus Mills, Tennessee. There you will find 200 acres of open range for the bison to roam. If you encounter a bison in the wild, the Friends of Land Between the Lakes advise that you keep your distance as they can be quite dangerous.

Bison can be very dangerous during mating season and with their young calves. Stay back from the fence if bison are near; bulls have been known to charge the fence and escape.

In addition to the South Bison Range, Land Between the Lakes is also home to the Elk & Bison Prarie - a 700-acre enclosure that allows visitors to drive through (a car fee applies) to view these impressive mammals. It is located in Golden Pond, Kentucky.
