Embrace The Holiday Magic With These Unspoken Traditions
The Unwritten Rules of the Holiday Season We All Secretly Follow
We are officially back in Christmas gear and next week marks a BIG holiday I look forward to every year. With holidays, come with a lot of traditions and some we do without even realizing! There are also unwritten rules that everyone just magically agrees on without ever talking about it. And I think that makes the holidays a little more special too.
Rule #1: You Must Pretend You Didn’t See That Gift in the Closet
We’ve all been there. We all figure out the spot where all the presents get hidden and sometimes we're not even looking for it. You’re looking for a sweater, a charger, a lost shoe — and boom, you spot a shopping bag with your name basically winking at you.
You freeze. You stare. You consider peeking. But no. Holiday law says you must act like you never saw it. You walk away like a noble hero doing the right thing… even though the suspense is now your entire personality.
Rule #2: There Must Be That ONE House on the Block That Goes Way Too Hard
Every neighborhood has the house. The one that looks like Santa’s workshop collided with a power plant. Inflatable snowmen. A fifteen-foot candy cane archway. Lights blinking so fast it should come with a seizure warning.
Do we judge? Sure.
Do we secretly love it? Absolutely.
Because without that one over-the-top house, the rest of us wouldn’t feel nearly as festive — or nearly as lazy about our own decorations.
Rule #3: Cookies Calories Do Not Count in December
Everyone knows this. Since the beginning of time. It’s science. Or at least, it should be.
December calories live in a magical loophole where gingerbread, fudge, and those little powdered-sugar wedding cookies don’t apply to your normal eating habits. If someone brings in treats to work, you have to take one. Maybe two. It’s the law.
Rule #4: We Will All Watch the Same Holiday Movies… Every. Single. Year.
No matter how many new holiday movies come out, we’re all going to end up watching the classics again:
Elf, Home Alone, The Grinch, The Santa Clause, and whatever Hallmark is pumping out this year that looks exactly like the one from last year.
And we’ll watch them like we’ve never seen them before.
Rule #5: The Holiday Spirit Hits at the Most Random Time
It never comes when you’re actually trying to be festive. Nope. It hits when you’re in the car and hear that one song, or when you’re wrapping a gift terribly, or when you step outside and it smells like “winter” even though you can’t explain what that means.
It sneaks up on you — like the holidays’ way of saying, “Hey, slow down. Enjoy this.” That moment happened for me today, I was out on a remote a little stressed since it was my first one and then it hit... We switched over to Christmas music at noon and I got to broadcast it! Instant holiday spirit!
So If You’re Feeling the Chaos… You’re Doing It Right
The holidays aren’t meant to be perfect. They’re meant to be messy, funny, chaotic, cozy, and a little bit magical. If you’re eating cookies for breakfast and still finding glitter in your hair from decorating? Congrats — you’re fully in the holiday spirit.
