The new threads are the first in a new 10-year deal the university signed with the athletic wear corporation.

Inspired by the iconic "gold dome" that serves as the campus' centerpiece just northeast of the stadium, the normally solid gold-colored helmets features a faint grid pattern to replicate the dome's appearance, as well as a faint mosaic pattern within the fabric of the jersey that replicates a mosaic on the floor of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart which serves as the home of the dome. From a distance, the changes and tweaks added to the uniform are hardley noticeable unless you know what you're looking for. All in all, I like the sleek look of the design, however there's something about tweaking the helmet design that doesn't sit quite right with me. There's something about seeing the sun gleam off those helmets when the Irish take the field that really captures the eye. I doubt the newly-added grid design will take anything away from that, and I certainly don't have a problem with changes and upgrades, but that helmet is iconic in the world of college football, and there are something that are perfect the way they are.

Here's a look at the home and away uniforms also unveiled this week:

Here, the designers discuss their idea for incorporating the dome into the design.
