The Interesting Role Transylvania Plays in Kentucky’s History
Quick…what are the first three things that come to mind when I say Transylvania? You would probably say Dracula, vampires, and spooky castles. I’m guessing “Kentucky” would never enter your mind, right? I mean, what in the world does the Bluegrass State have to do with Transylvania? Well, believe it or not, Transylvania has a surprising – and pretty fascinating – connection to the commonwealth. Let me explain.
Who Richard Henderson Was And Why He Matters
Let’s rewind to the late 1700s and meet a man named Richard Henderson. If that name sounds familiar, it should. Henderson County, Kentucky, was established because of him. Henderson was a jurist (he knew a lot about the law), land speculator, and politician with some big ideas. Henderson did NOT think the region should be named after him. He had something much more dramatic in mind.
Welcome to the forgotten colony of Transylvania.
The Transylvania Company And Its Big Plan
In 1775, Henderson helped form the Transylvania Company, a group that purchased a massive amount of land from the Cherokee through what became known as the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals. That land covered huge portions of what we now call Kentucky and Tennessee. Henderson and his partners, which included the legendary Daniel Boone (yes, that Daniel Boone), planned to turn it into a brand-new colony called Transylvania.
And it actually worked, at least for a little while.
Why The Transylvania Colony Failed
Transylvania was briefly established as a colony in 1775; however, the dream didn’t last long. The Continental Congress in Virginia stepped in and nullified the treaty, which basically shut the whole thing down. While the colony disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived, Henderson and his associates weren’t left empty-handed – they were compensated with 200,000 acres of land along the Ohio River.
So, even though Kentucky never became the “State of Transylvania,” this bold experiment still played a role in shaping early Kentucky and Tennessee. It’s a wild reminder that the state’s history includes more than frontier cabins and bourbon barrels.

This is one of those perfect little kernels of “useless” knowledge that would be perfect to bust out the next time someone mentions Transylvania.
