Here’s Why This Tennessee City is One of the Worst Places to Raise a Family
There are a lot of things to think about when it comes time to relocate - and one of the most important things to consider is if the new city is a good place to raise a family. Moving is a big pain in the butt and not something you want to do more times than absolutely necessary, so you want to get it right the first time.

How can you tell if one city is better than another when it comes to raising a family? I have no idea, but I know some folks who do. WalletHub.com recently released a list of 2023’s Best & Worst Places to Raise a Family. The report not only includes the rankings but also the data that backs up their findings.
In order to determine which cities are most conducive to family life, WalletHub compared 182 U.S. cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across five key dimensions: 1) Family Fun, 2) Health & Safety, 3) Education & Child Care, 4) Affordability and 5) Socio-economics.
One of the Very Worst
Out of 182 cities, Memphis, TN ranked 181st, making it one of the worst places in America to raise a family. That overall ranking was based on how Memphis ranked in the categories mentioned above. Let's take a look at those...
- Family Fun = 164th
- Health & Safety = 182nd (last)
- Education & Child Care = 171
- Affordability = 146th
- Socioeconomics = 168th
Those results are kind of ironic (don't ya' think?), considering how many families visit Memphis each year for life-saving treatments at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
In case you're wondering, the one city that scored lower than Memphis is Cleveland, OH. Wanna know what city is #1 on the list? Want to know how your hometown scored? Scroll over the map below to see the rest of the rankings, and see all of the data in the full report here.
