#TBT – My Chance Meeting with Elton John Was Pure Luck

It was almost 20 years ago that I attended my very first Elton John concert at Roberts Stadium in Evansville. 

I remember standing on one of the (stair) landings that took you down to the floor of Roberts Stadium.  Some guy approached us who apparently my former husband knew and they began talking about whatever and this and that. After introductions, he asked if we would like to meet Elton John.

Well, heck yeah!  We had no intentions of going backstage to meet Elton John whatsoever that night.  We were just thrilled to be there to see his show!  So, this guy led us down to the floor of Roberts Stadium to the backstage area and then we waited for HIM to appear.

I have to tell you, I've met many rock stars during my 35+ years in radio, (Def Leppard, Steven Tyler, Alice Cooper, Jon Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Pat Benetar, Huey Lewis, Heart, etc.) but this chance meeting of Elton John that night was so unexpected and exciting!  I couldn't wait to meet him!

So, after what seemed like an hour wait (it was probably 25 minutes), Elton started walking toward us dressed in an orange/red jacket with matching pants and wearing a black shirt. It was around Halloween after all. He extended his hand to shake mine and I remember him saying hi, nice to meet you, and he was this super friendly nice guy!  And since we weren't allowed to bring a camera with us (can't remember if I owned a cell phone at that time), the record rep took our picture and then Elton was off to the stage to rock the house down at Roberts Stadium.  What a FANTASTIC concert!

Elton John will return to Evansville and is scheduled to perform at the Ford Center on Saturday, November 11, 2017.
