Beginning this weekend, schools across the entire state of Indiana will serve as a testing ground for a 40-second play clock during high school football. Pending a successful run, the concept could be adopted across the country.

69 athletes from 14 different schools in and around the Evansville area will make their way to Indiana University in Bloomington this weekend to compete for state titles during the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Track and Field Finals.

Unbeknownst to them at the time, the Ben Davis and Pike High School basketball teams played their final games of the season on Saturday after the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) cancelled the remainder of their seasons as discipline for a fight that broke out during the game.

As is customary for the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), the pairings for the upcoming Sectional round of the state tournament were announced on Sunday, one week before the regular season wraps up. The pairings announced show some teams will face familiar foes to open the tournament, while others will match up against teams they have not yet seen.

It's the end of the road for the high school football season, and the Mater Dei Wildcats have the chance to close it out with a Class 2A state championship.

The Class 2A State Final is scheduled for next Friday at 11 a.m. Central inside Lucas Oil Stadium. If the Mater Dei Wildcats hope to make it there, they'll first have to travel two and a half hours north to Monrovia, Indiana to take on a Bulldogs team with the same intent.
