Perfect Thermostat Temperature for Indiana Homes This Winter
That Moment You Care About the Thermostat
There are a few moments in life when you suddenly realize that you’re officially becoming an adult. One of those moments is when you find yourself caring way too much about the thermostat. The days of cranking up the heat without a second thought are long gone. Once you start paying that utility bill every month, you start having some serious conversations with yourself about every single degree on that dial.
Here in Southern Indiana, we’ve been pretty lucky (for the most part) with some mild weather – the kind where you can open the windows and give your HVAC a well-deserved break. But we all know that won’t last forever. Those chilly mornings are on the way, and before long, we’ll all be debating that age-old question: What’s the perfect thermostat setting for winter?
The Best Winter Thermostat Setting for Comfort and Savings
According to Energy.gov, the sweet spot for saving money and staying cozy is around 68°F during the day in the colder months. They recommend bumping it down a few degrees while you’re asleep or away from home, because there’s no need to heat an empty home, right? The same rule applies in summer – you should keep your home a little warmer when you're gone and adjust it only when you’re home and need to stay cool.

So, how does that compare to your thermostat habits? Personally, I like to think I’m a bit of a penny pincher. Ours stays around 65°F in the winter, which is fine until someone starts complaining about “seeing their breath” in the living room. And since I still have an old-school thermostat, I have to remember to adjust it by hand, which is something I definitely forget half the time.

So, how about you? Are you team “keep it toasty” or “bundle up and save”? Either way, it’s that time of year to find your perfect balance between comfort and cost.
