Could Kentucky’s New State Dog Give the Tri-State Some Bragging Rights?

When people think of state symbols, they usually picture birds, flowers, or maybe even a state snack. I have learned several things about the state of Indiana but now I'm learning Kentucky might have some things we do not. Kentucky is looking at something a little more tail-wagging: an official state dog.

Lawmakers in Frankfort are considering Senate Bill 37, which would make the Treeing Walker Coonhound Kentucky’s official dog breed. And for those of us here in the Tri-State, that makes this more than just a Kentucky story and it’s a fun regional conversation for Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois too.

Why This Breed Matters to Kentucky

This isn’t just any dog picked at random.

The Treeing Walker Coonhound actually has deep Kentucky roots, developed in the 1800s by breeders John W. Walker and George Washington Maupin in Madison County, Kentucky. That homegrown history is a big reason supporters say it deserves official recognition.

The breed is known for being:

  •  Fast
  • Loyal
  • Smart
  • Fearless
  • Incredible at scent tracking

It’s also famous for its hunting ability, especially chasing raccoons and other game up trees, giving hunters a clear line of sight. That “treeing” instinct is where the breed gets its memorable name.

What It Means for the Tri-State

For our corner of the world, this story feels especially local.

The Tri-State region shares so much outdoor culture — from hunting traditions in western Kentucky to southern Indiana farmland and the wooded backroads of southern Illinois.

A Kentucky state dog could easily become a point of regional pride, because this breed’s personality reflects so much of what makes the area unique:

  • hard-working
  • outdoorsy
  • family-friendly
  • deeply rooted in tradition

It’s easy to picture plenty of families around Henderson, Owensboro, Evansville, Newburgh, and across southern Illinois knowing someone who has had a hound just like this.

Could Indiana or Illinois Ever Pick Their Own?

That’s where this gets really fun.

Kentucky may be leading the way, but it naturally raises the question: What would Indiana or Illinois choose as their official state dog?

Indiana’s farming and sporting heritage could spark debates over breeds known for hunting, retrieving, or farm life. Illinois might lean into a breed tied to prairie life or family companionship.

It’s one of those lighthearted stories that gets people talking:
If your state had an official dog, what should it be?

For the Tri-State, that’s a conversation listeners and readers would probably love weighing in on.

More Than Just a Cute Title

Sure, on the surface this sounds like a fun symbolic move.

But state symbols often tell a bigger story about heritage, culture, and identity. In this case, Kentucky supporters say it highlights a breed that was born in the Commonwealth and became one of America’s favorite hounds.

And around here, where outdoor traditions still matter, that connection resonates far beyond state lines.

So whether you’re in Kentucky, Indiana, or Illinois, this one’s bound to spark opinions:
Should every Tri-State state have its own official dog?
