I've been driving for more than 30 years.

I've navigated countless roundabouts, survived Spaghetti Junction in Louisville, driven the loop in Chicago, where if you're not doing 80 mph in the 55 mph zone, you'll get run off the road, and have even managed to make it through Atlanta in rush-hour traffic unscathed.

Then I watched INDOT's video explaining Indiana's first "Quadrant Roadway Intersection."

I'll admit... I watched it twice, and I'm still not sure I could drive through it without questioning every life decision that got me there.

Indiana transportation engineers have been on quite a streak lately. First came roundabouts - everywhere. Then displaced left turns started popping up, including the massive Lloyd Expressway reconstruction in Vanderburgh County and portions of Warrick County. Now comes something called Quadrant Roadway Intersections.

So I decided to figure out what it actually is.

What is a Quadrant Roadway Intersection?

Despite the intimidating name, the basic idea is surprisingly simple.

Instead of making a traditional left turn at the main intersection, drivers wanting to turn left are redirected onto a separate connector road that loops around the intersection. That removes left-turn traffic from the main signal, allowing through traffic to move more efficiently.

The main intersection still handles drivers going straight or turning right, while separate traffic signals manage those redirected left turns.

It sounds complicated because... well... it kind of is.

But transportation engineers say there's a good reason for it.

Why INDOT Likes These Designs

According to INDOT, removing left-turn traffic from the main intersection reduces delays at busy intersections because traffic signals don't have to dedicate extra time for protected left turns.

The agency also says quadrant intersections have 30 potential conflict points where crashes occur, compared to 32 at a traditional intersection, while improving traffic flow at high-volume locations.

INDOT says the design can also be less expensive than building a full interchange while still improving safety and efficiency.

Indiana Has Been Embracing New Intersection Designs

If it feels like Indiana has been experimenting with road designs lately, you're probably not imagining it.

Roundabouts have become common across the Hoosier State in the last decade.

Here in the Evansville area, crews are also constructing displaced left-turn lanes as part of the Lloyd4U project, another traffic design intended to improve safety and reduce congestion.

Now the Quadrant Roadway Intersection in northeast Indiana joins the list.

I Guess Time Will Tell

Maybe this is one of those things that looks far more confusing on paper (or in a video) than it does from behind the wheel.

Or maybe, I'll still need GPS, a pep talk, and a deep breath before making my first left turn through one.

Either way, Indiana drivers may want to watch INDOT's explanation before they encounter one in person. It certainly can't hurt.
