With flu and respiratory illness activity surging across the country this winter, many of us are trying to rest more, stay hydrated, and take better care of our bodies. Around my house, when we start to feel that familiar “crud” creeping in, there is one thing I always reach for in the kitchen. Fire Honey.

Why Fire Honey Is My Favorite Winter Comfort Remedy

It is warm, spicy, soothing, and feels like wrapping yourself in a blanket from the inside out. It is not medical advice, and it is not a cure-all for anything, but it is one of my favorite comfort rituals when I am run down or fighting off the winter ick.

How I Developed My Version Of Fire Honey

I originally found a version of this recipe online, and over time, I’ve tweaked and strengthened it by reducing the honey and adding ground cloves for their cozy, aromatic qualities, and for their rich antioxidants and their inflammation-fighting abilities.

How To Use Fire Honey For Cozy Winter Comfort

Fire Honey can be taken by the spoonful, or stirred into a mug of hot (but not boiling) water or herbal tea. Using water that is too hot can destroy some of the natural benefits in raw honey, so warm water is the way to go. Here is how I make it:

My Fire Honey Recipe And Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup raw local honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Stir everything together in a glass jar until fully blended. Store it in a cabinet or pantry, not the refrigerator.

What Fire Honey Tastes Like And How I Enjoy It

The flavors are bold and slightly sweet with a slow, warming heat. The spices give it richness and depth, and the honey balances everything out so it goes down smoothly. On tired winter evenings, I like to mix a spoonful into tea, sit still for a minute, and just let it do its comforting thing.
