5 Indiana Roads Named Among the Most Dangerous for Winter Driving in the U.S.
Most people don't want to be driving on roadways during winter storms. That's especially true when it comes to these Indiana roads.
Indiana is known as "The Crossroads of America," mainly because the city of Indianapolis is the hub for several major Interstate highways that crisscross the state, connecting Hoosiers to the rest of the United States. Recently, the state of Indiana was named one of the best states in the entire country to drive in. While Indiana is full of roads that offer great scenery and make for a great Sunday drive, we also have a few sketchy roads throughout the state. Whether they are very narrow, curvy, crowded with other drivers, or just full of potholes, I'm sure we can all think of a few roads that we tend to try to avoid. That is especially true when the roads are covered in ice and snow.

Several parts of Indiana have already seen a good dose of winter weather, which has led to some dangerous roadways on commutes to and from work. It's no secret that winter is just getting started, so Hoosiers can expect more days like that in the near future. Of course, we all know that winter driving in Indiana can be quite treacherous. Not only does it require a certain set of skills, time management, and patience, but it's also important to know what roads to avoid when driving conditions are bad.
Five Indiana Roads Among America's Worst for Winter Driving
Recently, a car dealership in Florida, Gunther Volkswagen of Daytona Beach, of all places, surveyed 3,000 people to find out the 200 most dangerous roads in America to drive on during the winter. Unfortunately, 5 Indiana roads made this list:
- #29: Interstate 74
- #45: Interstate 69
- #112: Interstate 80/90
- #140: Interstate 70
- #151: Interstate 65
As you will see, all of these roads are interstates, which makes sense in many ways as to why they are among the most dangerous for winter driving. You're driving at a higher rate of speed on these roads. That mixed with snow and ice makes for a dangerous combination. It's important to note that just because you aren't driving on a major highway in the winter months in Indiana, it doesn't mean the roads aren't dangerous.
No matter what road you have to take, if you absolutely have to get out on snowy/icy roads, be sure to take your time, drive responsibly, and use 511in.org to check current road conditions.
