What’s Your Sign? If You’re From Southern Indiana You Should Know
Many moons ago, I was in Bloomington, Indiana, moving into college, starting a new beginning away from Evansville. One of the first girls I met said, "Oh my gosh, you have such a strong southern accent," which instantly made me laugh. I do not believe I have an accent, but I would agree I have the common drawl several southern Indiana folks share. What caught my attention even more was when she said, "You must be from Evansville". How did she know that by my accent? Do we Evansville folk really have an accent that I've been denying my whole life?
According to Google:
"The "Southern drawl" in Southern Indiana is a linguistic feature of the South Midland dialect, distinct from the rest of the state's Midwestern accent, and is most noticeable in the southern part of Indiana. This accent is characterized by elongated vowels and is often called the "Hoosier Twang", with its prominence decreasing as you move north. This dialect is influenced by a long history of settlement from Kentucky and other Southern states."
Being from southern Indiana comes with its inevitable characteristics, traits such as the accent, and other undeniably Evansville things that make us who we are. It's not just Evansville that has tell-tell signs of where you're from, as I've included plenty of Warrick County clues to help you out. In case you're wondering what some of these things are that you're probably doing and don't realize it, here are some signs you might be from southern Indiana, as Jeff Foxworthy said.
