Hidden Waterfalls in the Bluegrass State

I don't know what it is, but there's just something magical about finding a waterfall in the forest.  Now typically when I think of waterfalls, my mind goes right to Niagra Falls or the mountains, so the Bluegrass State isn't usually at the top of my mind when I think of waterfalls.  However, Kentucky is home to several sizeable waterfalls and many smaller waterfalls as well. There is a database online that keeps track of all the waterfalls in the state of Kentucky, and currently, there are more than 1,000 waterfalls in that database.  If you're interested, you can find that information, here.  Today we're going to highlight one stunning waterfall with a rather unique name.

Daniel Boone National Forest

The Daniel Boone National Forest is spread across 21 counties in Eastern Kentucky.  The forest is home to more than 708,000 acres of forest with more than 600 trails to choose from.

From over 600 miles of trails to two federally recognized wildernesses and more than 250 recreation sites, the Daniel Boone National Forest provides countless opportunities to explore eastern Kentucky's landscape, heritage, and culture.

If you're a fan of nature, you need to give Daniel Boone National Forest a visit!  Now 600 trails is a lot to soak in, so it could be daunting to figure out where to start.  So might we suggest starting with one that leads to a beautiful waterfall?

Dog Slaughter Falls

Okay, so the name could use some work, but located on Dog Slaughter Falls Trail is a stunning waterfall.

Dog Slaughter Falls Trail on London Ranger District runs parallel to Dog Slaughter Creek through dense stands of hemlock and rhododendron. Near the mouth of the creek, a 15-foot waterfall (Dog Slaughter Falls) provides a scenic place to enjoy nature. The trail meanders over and around massive boulders before it connects to Sheltowee National Recreation Trail #100. The trail ends at the Cumberland River.
