Creating a solid early educational foundation is an important part of a kid's journey through school. Parents put a lot of thought into choosing the "right" elementary school, high school, and even college, but the importance of a quality preschool can't be overlooked. A recent study ranked the country's best and worst early education systems, and the report card was NOT good for Indiana.

States With the Best & Worst Early Education Systems in 2024

The study conducted by WalletHub compared data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, including the share of school districts that offer a state pre-K program, the number of pre-K quality benchmarks met and total reported spending per child enrolled in pre-K. When it was all said and done and all of the numbers were crunched, Indiana was at the very bottom of the list, as in #51, as in the worst early education system in America.

Why is Indiana's Early Education System So Bad?

Indiana's ranking all comes down to the numbers, so let's take a look at how the Hoosier State scored.

  • Quality Rank - 31st
  • Resources & Economic Support - 37th
  • Share of 3 and 4-year-olds enrolled in pre-K - 49th
  • Total reported spending per child enrolled in preschool - 46th

The more that states invest in early education, and the more accessible they make those programs, the more they will benefit in the future. Having access to quality early education gives students a jump start that can improve their future performance in school, and lead to better job opportunities and higher earnings in the long-term. According to High School.com, there are 682 high schools in Indiana. 555 of those are public schools, while the remaining 127 are private.
