Forget roses, heart-shaped candy, and fancy date nights – February in Indiana comes with a very different kind of scent in the air. You see, humans aren’t the only ones looking for love in February – that’s also the time of year when those funky striped skunks are busy…getting busy.

When Skunk Mating Season Happens In Indiana

Every year in Indiana, skunks wake up from their winter slowdown and start trying to find a mate (or many mates) – usually from late February through early March. Unlike humans, who seem to be dating year-round, skunks keep things short and sweet. Skunks have to squeeze a lot of loving into a short amount of time, so they often have more than one partner and tend to be much more active during this time. That means you’re likely to see (and smell) more skunks wandering around neighborhoods, roadsides, and backyards.

Why Skunks Spray And When It Happens

As a reminder, skunks aren’t aggressive animals, and they aren’t out to spray you just for fun. In fact, that terrible spray is their last line of defense. Skunks rely on their scent because they’re not particularly fast or fierce, and their eyesight isn’t great. That means they may not notice you as quickly as you’d expect – especially at night, when they’re most active.

What Indiana DNR Says About Skunk Encounters

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reminds Hoosiers to give skunks (and all wildlife) plenty of space. If a skunk feels threatened, it may stomp its feet or arch its back as a warning sign. That’s your cue to stop, back away slowly, and let the skunk go about its business. Most of the time, you can avoid getting sprayed by simply keeping your distance.

So the next time you catch that familiar “skunky” smell drifting through the air, try to think of it this way: it’s just nature doing its thing. Somewhere nearby, a striped little Romeo is on the hunt for love. Picture a much less creepy version of Pepé Le Pew, have a laugh, keep your distance, and maybe hold your nose until March passes. Indiana spring is right around the corner – and thankfully, so is fresher air.

38 Celebrities Who Were Born in Indiana

There are a bunch of famous folks that everyone knows were born in Indiana, but there are even more that you didn't know about. Most of this list is arranged in alphabetical order, except for the handful of celebrities born in our neck of the woods here in southern Indiana. I gotta give them a little preferential treatment.
