Did You Know This Device Used Around the World Was Invented in Indiana?
Before I get too far into this article, let me drop a fun (and completely useless) little etymology lesson on you. Have you ever wondered why inventors or scientists say “Eureka” after making a breakthrough or discovery? Well, the word “Eureka” actually comes from a Greek phrase meaning “I have found it!” Here endeth the lesson.
You might be surprised to learn that one of the biggest “Eureka!” moments in the history of the world happened here in Indiana.

An invention that nearly every adult in the modern world uses on a regular basis came from the Hoosier state. The fuel pump, that handy thing you use at the gas station, was invented by Sylvanus Freelove Bowser from Fort Wayne, Indiana, way back in 1885. Originally used to dispense kerosene, his design evolved into what became the first “filling station.” By 1905, Bowser’s system moved outdoors and became the early model for today’s gas pumps.
Indiana has even more to brag about. Like Santa Claus Land (now Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari), the world’s first theme park, dreamed up by the Koch family. Over in Illinois, the zipper was invented in Chicago, and we can’t forget about Kentucky’s musical claim to fame. The “Happy Birthday” song was written by Louisville sisters Mildred and Patty Smith Hill.

So, next time you're filling your tank, zipping up your coat, or belting out “Happy Birthday,” remember that you’re living proof that the Midwest is full of brilliant minds and world-changing ideas. Maybe the next world-changing invention will come from you!
