What Changed Under the New Law

According to The Gun Owners' Bill of Rights provided by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, under the new law that went into effect on July 1, 2022, a license or permit is not required to possess or carry a handgun, shotgun, or rifle.

Anyone over the age of 18 who does not fall under what the state calls an "improper person" can not only carry a handgun, shotgun, or rifle in their vehicle without a license or permit, but they can also carry - either openly or concealed - on their person as well.

What Is an "Improper Person?"

According to the Gun Owners' Bill of Rights, an "improper person" includes those with a "felony conviction, domestic violence offense, or has a dangerous mental illness, among other disqualifying reasons." Those who fall under any of those criteria would not be allowed to possess, own, or carry a firearm.

Can I Carry My Firearm Anywhere I Go?

Indiana law makes clear some restrictions to where a person can carry a firearm. For example, Indiana law prohibits firearms in the following locations:

  • Schools
  • Secure areas of airports
  • Commercial (or chartered) Aircraft
  • Casinos
  • Indiana State Fairgrounds
  • Indiana Government Center
  • Any other location where federal law prohibits

What If I Want to Carry in Another State?

While no license or permit is required in Indiana, you may still choose to apply for Free Lifetime Handgun Permit so that you can lawfully carry in other states that observe and accept an Indiana permit. There is no fee associated with applying for the lifetime permit.
