Indiana City Ranked The Worst for Urban Gardening in America 2024

Indiana is known for growing corn and farming in general, so it's surprising to see that one city in Indiana is actually the worst in the entire nation for urban gardening. Sounds crazy, right? So, I did some research about what urban gardening is and how Hoosiers can find better ways to go about it.

What is Urban Gardening?

Urban gardening is not your traditional backyard garden. It's kind of like a mini-garden since you don't have very much yard space in the city. You can't exactly start tilling the landscaping at your apartment or condo either!

Urban gardens are important for areas that don't have close access to fresh vegetables. Sometimes the community neighbors will take turns tending the garden and share the veggies freely.

An urban garden is simply a garden located in an urban area, such as a city or town. It can take many different forms, from a small container garden on a balcony to a larger community garden in a public space. One of the main benefits of urban gardening is that it allows people who live in urban areas to access fresh, healthy produce that they might not otherwise have access to. This is especially important in low-income neighborhoods or so-called "food deserts" where access to fresh produce is limited.

Ah yes, in the famous words of Ricky Bobby, Hammond, Indiana has been ranked as The Worst City for Urban Gardening in America. LawnStarter.com compiled a lot of statistics and information to get these rankings.

Evansville, Indiana made the list, too. Out of the 500 cities in the study, the River City is close to the bottom at 295.
